Apothecary Diaries: A Masterclass in Slow-Burn Romance and Storytelling

It’s been a while since I updated this blog, been busy with the Spring Semester, but Apothecary Diaries is one story I have to talk about.

If you’re watching the anime or reading the manga, you’ve probably felt the same frustration? as many fans — the Jinshi x Mao Mao romance is taking its sweet time. In fact, the anime’s pacing makes it even slower. If you’re craving more development in their relationship, the light novel is probably your best bet. But here’s the thing: I actually love that the romance isn’t rushed.

When I first started the manga, I expected Mao Mao to fall into the usual “strong-headed girl softens over time” trope. You know — after a few arcs, she’d warm up, and things would start moving. But that never happened. The romance unfolds so subtly that at one point, I questioned if this was even a romance story. Yet, the pacing feels intentional. The author takes the time to build a world that feels rich and alive, where every arc naturally leads into the next, expanding the palace intrigue and deepening the characters' bonds along the way.

Jinshi was introduced early, and if you’ve read or watched a lot of romances, you could tell there was something there. The chemistry is undeniable. But the beauty lies in the journey — the story doesn’t force their connection. Instead, every interaction, every arc adds another layer to their dynamic. When Mao Mao finally ends up at Jinshi’s residence, it doesn’t feel like a random plot point. You can trace her being there back to everything that happened before. The progression feels earned.

And let’s not forget the comedy. Mao Mao’s deadpan reactions & Jinshi's as well are gold. The author really cooked with those moments, balancing humor and tension perfectly i dare say. Each side-eye, each dry remark — peak. It adds a unique flavor to their relationship, making the rare emotional beats hit even harder.

In the end, Apothecary Diaries isn’t just about romance. It’s about the journey. Every arc, every clue, every sideways glance builds a broader picture. The slow-burn isn’t a flaw — it’s a feature. And when that payoff finally comes, it’ll be all the sweeter.

This is easily my second favorite manga after Hokkaido Girls. If you’re not already reading or watching it, what are you waiting for? Shii is just that good.

But what do you think? Let us know in the comments down below. Cheers!
